How to start a vegetable garden on the cheap!

It's that time of the year again. Time to start thinking about getting your garden going. If you've never done a garden and don't know where to start here are a few tips that I learned along the way.... The first thing you are going to need to do is have some dedicated space for your garden. If you live in an apartment it may be more of a challenge but not impossible. It this is the case you will probably need to plant your garden in containers. Here's a great article on container gardening http://containergardening.about.com/od/containergardening101/a/containerwhy.htm Second step, get containers. You are going to need lots of them with good drainage. You can find these free sometimes at nurseries. The 6 packs are pretty much disposable anyway. They have so many plants that come in and a lot of these places would love to get rid of them. I got some a couple years back at a local nursery. Home-Made Carl's Jr. Hand Scooped Malt's

Why pay almost $5 for a malt when you can do make them at home for less than $1 each (probably less if you buy the ice cream in the gallon tubs) Get out your magic bullet or blender. Add about 6 scoops of vanilla ice cream 1 cup of whole milk (more or less depending on how thick you like them) Add in 4-5 tablespoons of Ovaltine Malt mix. Top with a scoop of Cool Whip and you are done! Tastes just like an old fashioned malt! My son loves these! He can't get enough.

And thousands of them are pre-made versions of things people used to make at home. So when does it make sense to buy it and when is it better to make it? Jennifer Reese , a California mother and author of   “Make the Bread, Buy the Butter,”   went on a year-long quest to figure that out. Reese started seriously looking into the issue when she was laid off from her job and sought to save money on groceries. “I’d rather make bread than run to the supermarket,” she said. “And it turns out to be a couple of dollars per loaf cheaper to make it than to buy it. ” That’s right. According to Reese’s research,  it costs her $1 to make a loaf of bread, than to spend $4.39  to buy it from the groce
